Wickenden Lantern Walk runs Monday and Thursday evenings
The walk begins at 7:15 PM and 8:30 PM on Mondays and Thursdays through late March. Participants meet at the iron gate on Gano Street, just south of the India Point footbridge. Lanterns hang on hooks beside the threshold.
The route
The path follows the eastern bank tow route for roughly two miles, passing under the old rail spur and along the stone embankment where barges once waited. The lanterns cast enough light to see the cut marks in the granite and the iron mooring rings still embedded in the wall. At the halfway point, the route turns inland through a short tunnel that emerges near the Eddy Street stairway.
Walkers return along the same path or continue north to the Benefit Cut overlook, depending on the evening. Monday walks typically loop back. Thursday walks extend to the overlook when the tide schedule allows.
What to bring
The path is uneven in sections, particularly near the tunnel entrance where roots have lifted the paving stones. Boots with grip work better than flat soles. The route is exposed along the water, so a jacket helps even in mild weather.
Lanterns are returned at the gate. If the 7:15 PM slot is full, the 8:30 PM walk usually has space, though it's worth checking availability by late afternoon. The organizers post a weekly note at the Clockwork Arcade bulletin board on Fridays.
Evening details
The walk moves at a steady pace but stops twice—once at the embankment to let boats pass under the footbridge, and again at the tunnel mouth where the guide points out the date carved into the lintel. No one rushes. Some evenings feel longer than forty minutes; some feel shorter. Both are correct.
The last walk of each month includes a brief talk about the canal system that used to connect this route to the Traverse Canal under Smith Street. The talk happens at the overlook and adds fifteen minutes to the Thursday schedule.
Reserve a lantern slot through the usual channels or arrive ten minutes early and take an unclaimed hook. Most weeks have room.
