Trestle House serves dinner Thursday through Sunday

Trestle House runs above the old valve works on North Main, where the inlet widens before the rail bridge. You climb the exterior stair — metal treads, no sign — and push through a fire door that opens into a narrow hall. The dining room is straight ahead: four tables, exposed brick, windows facing the water.

They plate from a single menu that changes weekly. Thursday through Sunday, dinner service starts at six. Last seating is nine, and they mean it. No reservations, no phone number posted. You show up or you don't.

What they're running

The kitchen works with whatever the Pawtucket market brought in that morning. Expect fish — usually striped bass or bluefish — roasted whole and served family-style if your table wants it that way. Sides rotate: charred greens, roasted roots, bread with cultured butter. The wine list is short, leaning Portuguese and Loire.

Last week they ran a braised lamb shoulder with white beans and preserved lemon. The week before, it was mackerel with fennel and olive oil cake. Portions are generous. Two people can split a main and still need the bread.

The room itself

The space used to be the foreman's office, back when the valve works ran three shifts. You can still see the painted numbers on the brick where the production board hung. The windows are original, single-pane, and they rattle when the commuter rail passes.

Tables are close together. You'll hear the conversation next to you. The lighting is minimal — a few pendant bulbs, candles after dark. It's warm in winter, which matters when you're walking distance from the Arcade Passage.

Timing and getting in

Arrive before seven if you want a window table. After eight, you're looking at the bar seats — two stools near the kitchen pass — or a wait. They don't take names for a list; you stand in the hall or go back down to the street.

The staff will tell you the wait, but they won't hold a spot if you leave. Most people walk the inlet path for twenty minutes and come back.

If you want to confirm they're open on a particular night — weather sometimes closes the stair — you can check availability through the building super's listing at the North Main exchange. They update it mornings.

Bring cash or card. The check comes on a clipboard with the week's produce receipt still attached.
